Bill Riley Talent Search
This year the Allamakee County Fair will again continue a tradition by hosting a preliminary competition of the Bill Riley Talent Search with the winner in each division advancing to the Iowa State Fair.
There are two divisions for competition: Sprouts, which include people between the ages of 2 and 12 years; and the Senior division, which includes people between the ages of 13 and 21 years old. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, July 17th at the free tent. The contest will begin at 2:00.
If you are interested in being a contestant for the local talent search you will need to fill out the application below and include all information needed. Please do not mail applications before April 15th. Contestants will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis after the April 15th deadline. The final deadline to submit your applications will be June 30th. There will be 8 entries in each division. There will be priority given to Allamakee County residents. If there are not 8 entries by June 30th from Allamakee County, those remaining positions will be filled by residents from other counties. All participants must have an Iowa residency. All contestants will be notified by July 9th on the details of what time you are to be at the fairgrounds for your performance. If plans change and you can’t participate, please contact the number below.
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each division. Prizes in the sprouts division will be: First place - $50.00; Second place - $25.00; and Third place - $15.00. Prizes in the seniors division will be: First place - $100.00; Second place - $50.00; and Third place - $25.00. This year’s contest is sponsored by Allamakee Music Boosters.
There are several rules laid out by the Iowa State Fair that need to be followed in order for the contestants to advance to the State Fair. These rules are listed below:
1.
Sprouts: 2 through 12 years old and Seniors: 13
through 21 years. A person’s age for
the Iowa State Fair competition is determined at the time they win a local
show. A 12 year old (or 21 year old)
could turn 13 (or 22) by State Fair and still be eligible in the sprout (or
senior) division, as they met age requirements at the time of qualifications.
2.
When
one member of an act is 12 or under, that act must appear in the sprout
category. All 13 or 14 year olds may
appear with younger person in an act, but NO
ONE AGE 15 OR OLDER WILL APPEAR IN THE SPROUT CATEGORY AND NO ONE 12 OR UNDER
WILL APPEAR IN THE SENIOR DIVISON.
3.
Each
act will run no more than three minutes.
Acts running longer than three minutes may be disqualified. Set up time is not included, BUT IS LIMITED TO ONE MINUTE.
4.
No
more than FIVE PERSONS are allowed
in an act. Piano accompanist is NOT
included in an act and may be any age.
No more than three accompanists permitted per act. Drums, amps, etc. are discouraged due to the
one-minute setup time. NO COMBOS, ROCK BANDS OR SIMILAR MUSICAL
GROUP PERMITTED.
5.
Vocalist
may not sing with a prerecorded tape or any type of prerecorded electronic
musical accompaniment. This includes
prerecorded accompaniment within an instrument. (For example, keyboards with added rhythms or
orchestration.) Pantomime, lip sync,
and karaoke are also not allowed with a prerecorded accompaniment for dance
acts, batons, etc. Pure “mime” is
accepted.
6.
Contestants
may only appear once in any given show.
They may not perform “solo” and then return in the same show in a duet
or trio. Contestants are allowed to
perform in different acts in different shows, but they may only qualify for the
State Fair Show with one act.
7.
You
will need name, complete address, birth date, age, social security number and
phone number (including area code) for all contestants in the act. If there is more than one person in your act
we need to have the name of which person will be the contact person. Also we need to know the type of act
including title of song or routine. If
you need use of a piano that needs to be listed also, if you plan to bring your
own piano please note that on the application below. Failure to include all information will result in your
application being put at the bottom of the list.
